Back pain is a common issue, with up to 80% of people experiencing back pain at some point in their lives. If you google it, there are a million and one treatment recommendations truthfully, even in the rehab world, there are "camps" of therapists preaching set ideologies of treatment. Low back pain is multifactorail-rarely is there just one thing that led to the pain happening at that time. Figuring out what to do for the pain has been overcomplicated, and we want to help simplify it!
1) Stay moving in a way that doesn't hurt
Exercise is an effective "pump" for the cardiovascular system, which helps flush out inflammation from cranky tissues. On top of that, continuing to move or exercise in ways that feel good prevents deconditioning that would happen from total rest or time off.
2) Ease into movement in the directions that are uncomfortable
We aren't saying go all out and push through pain. What we are saying is gently move through ranges of motion that feel okay, and ease into more of it over time. Showing our nervous system and exposing it into the ranges of motion that feel good, while allowing it to adapt to those ranges, helps increase that range over time.
3) Prioritize recovery
Sleep. Nutrition. Stress management. If you aren't focusing on these things when you have an injury, you are missing a pivotal piece of addressing your pain. Our body needs these three things in order to have optimal recovery. SUBoptimal recovery means less attention and resources put towards repairing tissue that is inflamed.
We know this is broad, and very general recommendations. Our hope is this is enough to help you start moving forward, and that you will find it is actually all you really needed! At the end of the day, a stronger, more resilient body is a large solution to pain. Increase the threshold and capacity of tissues, and they hit a pivotal point of overload and inflammation less frequently. Our goal is always to help increase that capacity to help YOU feel better and move better!
